Welcome to METU Virtual Campus in Second Life web site!
Increasing number of new and innovative technologies are providing different ways for teaching and learning. Three dimensional (3D) virtual worlds is an example for these technologies. 3D virtual worlds can be defined as the simulation of the real world on Internet. In these environments, users can identify themselves through their avatars. Users can control their avatars with keyboard and mouse, and they can move, walk, run, and even fly. Moreover, they can engage in verbal communication with other avatars through text and audio.
Second Life (SL) is one of the most commonly used three dimensional virtual world, which is developed by Linden Lab located in San Francisco in 2003. Second Life has been used for different purposes including, education, social networking, shopping, and marketing.
METU Virtual Campus in Second Life was established in August 2010 through funds by METU Scientific Research Project by Virtual Worlds Research Group (vw.metu.edu.tr). It is the first example of the use of Second Life for virtual campus in Turkey. The main aim of the METU Virtual Campus in Second Life include, but not limited to following:
